Enabling metered connection on windows 10

If windows update automated downloading is making your internet experience slower, enabling metered connection can be a quick and easy solution.

Windows 10 has a new feature called “Windows Update Delivery Optimization” that”lets you get Windows updates and Windows Store apps from sources in addition to Microsoft”. You can get the detail explanation in their detailed FAQ on the technology This feature is very helpful and convenient for downloading and installing windows updates in background without user’s interaction. However, it can consume significant internet bandwidth resulting in slower internet experience for foreground activities like web surfing, downloading and watching video. Windows 10 does have a solution to temporarily or permanently disable downloading windows updates on background. You can try this process

1. Select Settings from Start menu.

2. Click the Network and Internet section.

3. From the sidebar, Select Wi-Fi.

5. Select the network you’re currently using.

6. Click Properties.

7. From the Metered connection section, toggle the switch to On.

Now you’ll get the most out of your bandwidth speed for your internet activities like web browsing or content downloading. However, there are several limitations like

  • Windows will only download priority updates.
  • Apps downloading from the Windows Store might be paused.
  • Network connected Start screen tiles might stop updating.
  • Offline files might not sync automatically.
